It appears the Warehouse District's speakeasy is permanently closed. 

Tannins & Hops was opened at 619 SW Water in 2017 by Bryan Harlan at the old Rhodell brewery building. The bar temporarily closed in August for undisclosed reasons. 

On Monday, a message on the bar's Facebook page announced it will not reopen.

Entrepreneurs met Wednesday in Peoria's Warehouse District for some serious food talk. 

The inaugural Greater Peoria Food Innovation Meetup at Sous Chef attracted a large crowd of people who make food their business across Central Illinois. 

"There's a whole different slew of products in the food arena that really qualify as innovation, but maybe not innovation as we would usually define it," said Tory Dahlhoff, the rural development coordinator for the Greater Peoria Economic Development Council.

Peoria’s Downtown Development Corporation is proposing the creation of a special service area. It would include the medical and warehouse districts plus downtown and the riverfront.

Planned services are street and sidewalk clean-up, landscape maintenance, decorations, directories and a website. Funding would come from three sources, two of which are taxes.

Sunnier weather means the return of outdoor markets in Peoria. And a new al fresco shopping experience starting this weekend in the Warehouse District is catered toward the local Hispanic community. But event co-organizer Cesar Vargas says the markets, called Tianguis, aim to bring together both Hispanics and non-Hispanics.

In 2016, WCBU interviewed a husband-and-wife entrepreneur team aspiring to open a shop in the Warehouse District. Banu and Mike Hatfield planned to open Zion Coffee this summer. But the building, once the Union Depot Hotel, is still under construction.

A new converted residential space is opening its doors for potential tenants in Peoria’s Warehouse District. The Winkler Loft building was built in the 1926 to house Roszell’s Dairy. It later became home to Winkler Meats, which operated in the building until last year. 

The industrial building stayed in the family and is now being marketed as a 28-unit urban loft complex, with with 10,000 square feet of commercial space on the first floor. 

Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis praised the development during a ribbon cutting ceremony Mon.

Inaugural CityFest to Enliven Warehouse District

After much work, comes a day of play for the City of Peoria. 

The city is putting on a block party in the Warehouse District Sat., called CityFest. The free event will provide entertainment along with an educational component. It’s being held on Adams St., the block between Pecan and Persimmon St., where the city recently completed green infrastructure upgrades, in response to the combined sewer overflow issue. 

The inaugural event will feature live music, craft beer and food trucks. City Fest is free and open to the public.

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner visited The Nest Coworking, a shared workspace for startups, in Peoria Tues., touting his pro-business agenda.

Rauner greeted a room of young business owners, software developers and designers essentially by saying, “I was like you once.”

“I was a venture capitalist myself for 32 years before going into public service. I know firsthand how hard it is to start a business and build a business, how much risk and sacrifice and sweat and worry is involved in it,” Rauner said.

Murray Building Approved for Historic Tax Credits

The Murray Building in Peoria’s Warehouse District has been approved by the National Parks Service for its design and construction methods as they relate to the Historic Tax Credit program.   

The CEO of the property management team heading up the redevelopment of the building says the Historic Tax Credits are significant to the feasibility of the Murray Place project.   

He says the approval of Tax Credits lays the groundwork going forward.

The Murray Building renovations are turning the old retail outlet into a mixed-use building.

The old four-story Murray Building situated in Peoria’s Warehouse District is getting a new tenant.

The national engineering and architecture firm Farnsworth Group announced Wed. it's relocating its Peoria offices to the second floor of the building, on the corner of Walnut and Water St.

Farnsworth currently occupies a building on North Knoxville Avenue.

  The Peoria Municipal Band plays its last Wednesday night Warehouse District concert of the year this evening. It’s the ninth such event this year  for the Peoria Municipal Band. Dave Vroman is the band’s conductor with Erin Moll as the guest vocalist. The event is at Water Street and State Street starting at 7:00p.m.. Patio seating is available for those dining and drinking at the Water Street eateries. Lawn chairs are also encouraged for those interested lawn and on street seating.

Running Central coming back to Peoria

The Warehouse District in downtown Peoria will soon have a new tenant. The owners of Running Central announced they are re-locating from Peoria Heights back to Peoria as early as April.
