Illinois will get $1.7 million in federal grants for six anti-poverty programs.

The Salvation Army is supporting one of the largest disaster relief operations in its history. The organization has 71 mobile feeding units from across the nation deployed in Texas.  Salvation Army trained disaster workers are also being deployed and staged in waves to help with the immediate need and ongoing recovery effort that will be necessary.

State officials are offering training to people who want to volunteer at the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site. The site is looking for people who want to participate in living history, serve as tour guides, work in the visitor center or gift shop, and contribute behind the scenes.

Compassion fatigue appears to be setting in for the communities impacted by the November 17th tornadoes. That’s according to the Tri-County Long Term Recovery Center that helps coordinate resources for those seeking assistance following the disaster.

Outside help for Peoria County floods

Peoria County is relying on volunteer help in the wake of last month’s flooding.  Assistant Administrator Scott Sorrel says the County is reaching out to trained volunteers in Christian County to help with disaster assessments.  He says additional Red Cross staff will also help answer flood-related calls, and volunteer architects from across the state will help calculate damage.
