There is considerable pressure on Peoria city council members to decide where the city will stand on recreational cannabis sales and cultivation sooner rather than later.

Like other local governments throughout the state, Peoria is deliberating whether to allow the sale and cultivation of recreational marijuana within the city's borders. Possession of up to 30 grams and usage in most private spaces becomes legal in Illinois on January 1.

PEORIA -- A coalition of Peoria social justice groups are proposing the end of cash bonds for people awaiting trial in Illinois.

Illinois state Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth gathered local human service providers and state contractors together Wed. in a plea to the governor and lawmakers to pass a sustainable budget.

The Peoria Democrat says it should be the focus of Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s upcoming State of the State address.

“The state of the state is we need a budget, and we need a budget now,” Gordon-Booth said. 

The rally cry comes exactly a week ahead of the governor's annual speech.

State Representative Jehan Gordon-Booth, D-Peoria, is sponsoring a bill that keeps working families from losing child care assistance.  

The Peoria Democrat’s measure challenges Governor Bruce Rauner’s recent changes to the Child Care Assistance Program.

On July 1, Rauner decreased eligibility for CCAP and increased the cost of copays. That translates to about 90 percent of the families who previously received benefits would no longer be eligible.
