Dunn says the state’s budget crisis is negatively affecting the Carbondale campus, but it also has problems of its own.

Last week, when Southern Illinois University revealed that its main campus in Carbondale needs to borrow money from its Edwardsville location, the news seemed shocking. Who knew SIU was in such dire straits? It wasn’t the kind of news any school would want to broadcast.

A new poll says Illinois voters are divided on what to do about the state’s financial problems.

The poll puts Illinois' deficit at $10 billion, and gives voters three choices for how to fix it: raise taxes, cut "waste and inefficiency," or both.

Cuts were the most popular answer at 45 percent. Just 11 percent favored only raising taxes; about a third said do both.

Paradoxically, when you ask voters about specific areas to cut, most are rejected. Support was strongest for spending on education, poor people, and individuals with disabilities.

Enrollment in Illinois’ public universities and community colleges continues to decline. That’s according to figures released  by the state Board of Higher Education.  The three University of Illinois campuses and Governors State University all experienced slight gains in undergraduate enrollment over the past year, but all other public universities reported declines. 

The Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees is expected to take up a proposed 3.9% increase in-state undergraduate tuition rate for the Carbondale campus.  The recommendation would bring annual tuition costs for an undergraduate SIU Carbondale student to $9,450.

Southern Illinois University is cutting its men's and women's tennis programs and reducing scholarships for the men's swimming and diving teams.  The reductions come as SIU faces declining enrollment and the state remains without a budget. School officials say the move will save about $660,000 annually starting next school year.

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Student groups at Southern Illinois University are asking school leaders to declare their campuses a sanctuary for students who are in the U.S. without legal permission.

Randy Dunn, president of the SIU system, says staff members are studying the issue. SIU has campuses in Carbondale and Edwardsville and a medical school in Springfield.

Brad Colwell, interim chancellor in Carbondale, says a sanctuary designation is "complex and brings with it a number of legal questions." He says a possible consequence is the loss of federal financial aid. 

United National Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will deliver his last public lecture while in office at Southern Illinois University next week.  SIU officials say the secretary general will speak Wednesday at the Carbondale campus.

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Alcohol will soon be on the menu at Southern Illinois University.

The school's board voted on Thursday to allow the sales of beer and wine at campus events. 

The decision to join other universities around the state that already allow alcohol sales comes as colleges are trying to find ways to increase revenues to cope with dwindling state funding. Supporters of the decision say it will increase attendance at sporting events on campus. 

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Students and researchers from Louisiana State University will travel to Southern Illinois University Carbondale for next year's total solar eclipse.

The team, which includes people from two other Louisiana institutions, plans to launch two large weather balloons from Saluki Stadium. 

 The launch will occur about 90 minutes before the total eclipse, set for 1:21 p.m. on Aug. 21.  A balloon equipped with a video camera will send real-time images as the moon blots out the sun. That feed will be provided to a NASA television program, which will broadcast from SIU.
