The nonprofit Pekin Outreach Initiative recently purchased a house downtown to serve as a centralized resource for people experiencing homelessness in the city.

Peoria Public Schools will open food distribution sites for all people ages 18 and younger Tuesday through March 30.

Brothers Kenny and Wayne Baum will co-chair this year’s Salvation Army Tree of Lights campaign.

The campaign runs November through January. It raises money for holiday assistance and financial support for people throughout the Peoria area. 

Wayne Baum is board chairman of CORE Construction.

“Peoria is such a generous community. I mean, in so many causes. They basically never say no; they reach out, small donations, large donations. And they always seem to come up with the necessary needs of the community," he said. 

The Salvation Army is supporting one of the largest disaster relief operations in its history. The organization has 71 mobile feeding units from across the nation deployed in Texas.  Salvation Army trained disaster workers are also being deployed and staged in waves to help with the immediate need and ongoing recovery effort that will be necessary.

The Salvation Army Shelter in Pekin closed in June for a complete renovation and is looking toward its rebirth. The Rust Transitional Shelter is looking to open its doors in about 30 days.

Salvation Army Seeking Donations For Food Pantry

The Salvation Army is asking for help with canned fruits and vegetables. Major Jesse Collins is the Tri-County Coordinator for The Salvation Army. Collins says their pantry is low. Holiday food drives typically keep The Salvation Army stocked through the summer. But Collins says demand for food and other services has hit area food pantries harder in the past few years.

Annual Peoria luncheon honors tornado relief efforts

The Peoria Salvation Army is honoring groups and individuals for their relief efforts following the November 17th tornado.  The recognition was part of the Salvation Army’s annual Community Luncheon. Crossroads United Methodist Church in Washington was honored for housing Salvation Army recovery efforts.  Evie Diaz is the division commander for the Salvation Army Heartland Division. She says the luncheon honors different kinds of recovery:
