Washington police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found behind a shopping center as a homicide.

Kyle McMurtrey, 34, of Washington, was found dead behind Washington Plaza last Wednesday. Washington Police Chief Mike McCoy said its the first violent murder reported in the city in years.

"Obviously, we're concerned. We want to solve this. But we've got some persons of interest that we're dealing with, and we're already talking to them, and we're following up on all the leads we've got," he said.

The Peoria County Board will consider a budget amendment aimed at addressing injustice in law enforcement and ensuring all who want to vote get a chance to do so safely. That comes as other county budget items are being scaled back amid COVID-19 related revenue challenges.

The appropriation totaling $853,500 would give additional dollars to the state’s attorney, sheriff, and election commission.

A Peoria man wanted in connection with a March shooting in Central Peoria is returning from Texas to stand trial.

Adrian Gregory, 29, was wanted in connection with a March 26 shooting in the 1100 block of W. Hanssler. A man was taken to the hospital with serious gunshot injuries.

Gregory was arrested in Arlington, Texas on April 15 by the U.S. Marshals. He was extradited back to the Peoria County Jail Tuesday.

He faces charges of attempted first degree murder and aggravated battery.

A Norwood teenager is dead after a rollover accident on Cameron Lane early Thursday morning.

Emergency responders were called to the 600 block of S. Cameron around 2:30 a.m. on a report of a rolled vehicle potentially on fire.

Responders on scene found a fully engulfed Ford Ranger in a ditch.

The driver, Lucas Smith, 16, was headed north on Cameron Lane when his truck left the road and struck a drainage ditch. The truck rolled, landed on its roof, and caught on fire.

The Illinois National Guard will be helping the Peoria Police Department keep an eye on the city over the weekend.

A man is dead after a shooting in Peoria late Wednesday night.

Peoria police responded to the 1700 block of N. Bigelow around 11:30 p.m. on a ShotSpotter alert indicating five rounds fired.

Police found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest, identified as 30-year-old Ryan Greenwood of Peoria.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said Greenwood was shot multiple times on his upper and lower body, and likely died instantly.

This is Peoria's fifth reported homicide of 2020.

The man's name hasn't been released. There is no suspect information.
