Jugglers use balance to do many things at once. This story shows that sports leaders often concentrate on many things. 

From 1968 through 1975, Mickey Schallau played third base for the Pekin Lettes, this country’s longest-standing Amateur Softball Association squad. 

In 1973, Mickey started the girls’ sports program at Peoria’s Spalding & Academy of Our Lady High Schools. This pioneering work began one year after Title IX went into effect: teaching golf skills and leading girls in competitive sports was uncharted territory.

Peoria Park District has a New Executive Director

The Peoria Park District’s board voted to instate its interim executive director to the permanent position.

The district announced Mon. Emily Cahill is the new Executive Director of Parks and Recreation, effective immediately.

It’s the second time the board has voted on a new executive director this year.

Cahill replaces Bonnie Noble, who retired last November after more than two decades serving in that role.

The Peoria Park District has named a new executive director of parks and recreation.

Susan Knoblauch, of Washington, was previously the director of activities and sports at the National Federation of State High School Associations.

She also taught and coached at Morton High School. Knoblauch replaces Bonnie Noble, who retired last November after 43 years working within the Park District. Noble served as executive directed for 24 years.

Knoblauch’s role takes effect June first, the park district said in a news release.

Peoria goverments look for more collaboration

  Five local governments participated in an informational meeting with the Peoria District 150 School Board last night. Peoria Public Radio’s Tanya Koonce reports the goals was to explore ways to cooperate.

Barry Cloyd is back this week. The singer/songwriter is performing tonight, as part of the Forest Park Nature Center's "Songs from the Woods" concert series. Cloyd talks about his long association with the Nature Center, the band he has put together for this concert, and about his songwriting process.

The concert is tonight at 7:00 at the Peoria Park District's Noble Center on North University in Peoria (the former location of the Peoria Riverfront Museum).

Peoria Park District Board OKs 2016 Budget

The Peoria Park District Board gave final approval to it’s 2016 spending plan Wednesday night.  The budget includes some part-time layoffs and closing some growing houses at Luthy Botanical Garden.  The balanced budget filled an initially-projected 255-thousand-dollar-deficit for the Park District.  The Board is also consolidating office space and staff by closing a former state facility.  Park District Officials say that last year saw more drastic cuts, including closing Donovan Golf Course and privatizing a swim team to save money.

Bonnie Noble To Retire From Peoria Park District

The longtime executive director of the Peoria Park District is retiring next spring.  Bonnie Noble is leaving after 24 years in the post.  Noble led efforts to form a campaign that funded the Peoria Playhouse Children’s Museum. She also helped triple with size of the Peoria Zoo by leading a capital campaign in 2009, and helped develop a recreational  trail system linking to the Rock Island Trail.

Glen Oak Park has a new resident in the historic building that once served as the Park District office. The Junior League of Peoria and its community partners are cutting the ribbon and opening the new Children’s Museum and PlayHouse Friday after nearly 15-years in the making.

This week, we're talking with Alex Larson about the Peoria Park District's inaugural Artist and Comic Expo. The event features many guests and creators with ties to the region -- including voice actor Larry Kenney, who worked on the 1980s animated series "Thundercats." Artists Jenny Frison and Hilary Barta, who currently work in the comic book industry, also grew up in and around Peoria.  The Expo also includes film screenings, panel discussions and activities aimed at children. The Artist and Comic Expo will be held May 9th and 10th at the Bonnie Noble Center.

Glen Oak Park in Peoria will soon have another destination for children and families. The Peoria PlayHouse Children's Museum opens June 12th. It's the realized effort of the Junior League of Peoria after 14 years of fundraising and creation.

A long anticipated children’s museum in Peoria now has a director. The Peoria Park District announced Rebecca Shulman Herz will lead the PlayHouse Children’s Museum. The museum will cater to children and families, and is expected to open later this year.

Peoria Park District receives grant for skate park

The Peoria Park District is getting some financial help to build a new skate park. The district announced Friday it’s getting a $285,000 grant from Illinois’ Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development and the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund.

New playground open on south side of Peoria

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park located on the south side of Peoria has some new play equipment. Park District and city of Peoria officials celebrated the opening of the new park facility located next to Fire Station 8, along MacArthur Highway. The equipment is red and yellow and is fire-department themed.

Peoria Rotary Adventure Grove now open

An effort to make Glen Oak Park a day-long destination is a step closer to reality. Officials with the Power of Play Campaign today celebrated the opening of the Peoria Rotary Adventure Grove. The outdoor feature will eventually connect the Peoria Zoo with the PlayHouse Children’s Museum that is undergoing construction.

The Peoria Park District’s Lakeview Recreation Center is getting an upgrade thanks to some financial help from the state.

Proctor celebrates 100 years of service

A local recreation center is celebrating 100 years of service in Peoria. The Park District and members of the Proctor Recreation Center buried a time capsule Friday as part of celebrations to honor the anniversary. The capsule contains historic pictures and other memories of the facility. It's to be dug up in 50 years.
