Peoria's Harrison Homes residents have a new place to seek assistance.

Located within a former apartment, the Harrison Homes Resource Center will evaluate resident needs and provide appropriate solutions. 

Peoria Police Chief Loren Marion III said a civilian city employee assigned to his department will staff the office a few times a week. The goal is to connect residents with a wide range of needed resources, such as transportation.

The Peoria Housing Authority is taking a big step towards redeveloping the Taft Homes. 

The Springfield Housing Authority is going to share its expertise with the Peoria Housing Authority. Rather than hire a new executive director, the PHA is temporarily calling on the SHA to address deficiencies.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development has rated the Peoria Housing Authority as substandard since 2011. But the SHA is labeled a high performer. The Springfield Housing Authority will manage the PHA for at least the next twelve months.

Four central Illinois communities will share more than $400,000 in federal housing money to help families with job-training, education and more.

The Peoria Housing Authority Task Force is asking the City Council to table a proposal to have the Greeley School redeveloped. The PHA will also not be submitting an application for tax credits next month.

The Peoria Housing Authority is hoping to grow its base of landlords willing to rent to Section 8 clients. The authority is kicking off monthly Section 8 Landlord Roundtable discussions Thursday.

The Peoria Housing Authority is hoping to expand its program that helps public housing residents become self-sufficient. The authority is asking its new not-for-profit arm, the River Valley Foundation, to take over the Access to Resources and Referral Opportunities Program or ARRO.

The first zoning change request related to the replacement of the Taft homes was on the Peoria City Council's agenda Tuesday, June 24, 2014. The zoning for the historic Greeley School property is in the part of the community known as the North Valley. It's part of the city with well organized neighborhood associations. Some neighborhood association members in the area have questions about the zoning variances required to get the property to meet the needs of the site development currently being proposed. 

The City of Peoria is making a bid to have the LST 325 dock on its Riverfront. Peoria Public Radio’s Tanya Koonce reports:

The Council voted seven to four to extend an invitation to the LST Board, committing 500-thousand dollars to the project and pledging to assemble the remaining financing if the ship makes the move. That could amount to more than a million dollars.

Bulking up on summer food programs

  The USDA is aiming to expand summer food programs in Peoria and Rockford. The Illinois Coalition for Community Services is working with the Peoria Housing Authority to meet that call.

A new Peoria Housing Authority program is helping some Harrison and Taft Homes residents pursue medical careers.

  The Peoria Housing Authority selected a co-developer to handle the Taft Homes project. Peoria Public Radio’s Tanya Koonce reports they’ve also committed to moving forward on the Greeley School site:


The Model Group does property development, construction, and also serves as a management company. It’s goal is to revitalize urban neighborhoods, including mixed-use developments, and affordable housing indistinguishable from market-rate homes.

PHA moving to initiate no smoking policy

The Peoria Housing Authority is partnering with another organization to make some of its housing complexes smoke-free. The Hult Center for Healthy Living is using a more than 130-thousand dollar grant from the Centers for Disease Control to help various apartment sites in Peoria and Tazewell Counties implement no smoking plans.

PHA receives HUD grant

The Peoria Housing Authority is receiving a federal grant to continue serving its senior residents. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded the PHA a 246-thousand dollar grant for the second time. The money will be dispersed over three years, and allows the authority to fund its Supportive Services Program for residents 62 and older.

PHA looking for community support for Taft project

The Peoria Housing Authority plans to launch a marketing campaign for its Taft Homes redevelopment project. The PHA wants to build up to six new apartment developments throughout the city for Taft’s more than 200 residents. The authority would then be free to either sell or lease the land where the complex currently resides.

Some local non-profits are getting the help they need to support low-income residents. The Local Initiatives Support Corporation or LISC is placing eight AmeriCorps members to various organizations like Novadebt, the Peoria Housing Authority, and Common Place to boost jobs, financial education, and economic opportunities for residents living on the city’s south side and East Bluff.

The Peoria Housing Authority will consider the potential ways and means for the redevelopment of Taft Homes next month. 

Officials with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development say they will be supportive as the Peoria Housing Authority decides how to re-develop the Taft Homes site. HUD representatives discussed programs the PHA could use to sell or demolish properties and either re-build or find replacement housing for residents.

The City of Peoria is using 46-thousand dollars of Tax Increment Finance funds to pay for a Taft Homes redevelopment study. Peoria Public Radio’s Tanya Koonce reports:

The Peoria Housing Authority property is within the Northside Riverfront TIF. The City is using TDA consulting to do the analysis. The firm specializes in working on public housing issues and its long-standing relationship with the Local Initiative Support Corporation. LISC and PHA are partnering with the city for the study results. Peoria City Manager Patrick Urich says the study is to consider all redevelopment options for the Taft Homes.
