Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell fired two of his deputies Tuesday after they were accused of theft in separate incidents.

Deputy Joshua Carr allegedly took another person's gift bag Sept. 27 from the Tavern on Prospect in Peoria. The theft was later reported by the victim, Asbell said.


Skeletal remains found on the banks of the Illinois River over the weekend don't belong to any of the three  Peoria County residents who have disappeared in recent years.


The Peoria County Sheriff's Office is investigating after skeletal human remains were found in the Illinois River near Glasford.

A 22-year-old Mapleton man faces multiple animal cruelty and burglary charges linked to a string of disturbing incidents across rural Peoria County.

The Peoria County Sheriff's Office said Dahlton B. Deal was arrested Friday for burglary, criminal trespassing, four counts of disorderly conduct, and six counts of animal cruelty.

Police believe Deal is responsible for a number of raccoon and opossum hangings in the Glasford and Trivoli areas over the last six months.

Deal was taken to the Peoria County Jail.

A 20-year veteran of the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office was terminated for unprofessional conduct.

The Peoria County Sheriff corrections staff is offering an inside look at the Peoria County Jail. It’s part of ICC Adult Community Programs. Sheriff Mike McCoy and corrections staff are hosting dinner and tour of the jail Thursday. Limited seating space means pre-registration is required.

  The Peoria Police Department is implementing a new emergency communications system today. Peoria Police started using the new digital radio interface with sign-on this morning.  The Peoria County Sheriff's Office has been using the system since earlier this year. The Peoria Fire Department is set to transition June 23.  The the digital system upgrade replaces the decades-old analog infrastructure. The new technology adds capability for first responders to have direct interagency communication.

The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office is changing the hours of its Records Division. It will operate from seven in the morning until eight at night, Monday through Sunday starting March 2nd. The division is currently open from seven in the morning until eleven at night.

The Peoria County Sheriff’s office is warning residents of a new scam. The department says people are receiving calls that they have an active warrant. The caller then gives victims instructions on how to pay the warrants. The Sheriff’s Office says it never makes calls about warrants and they must be taken care of in-person. Residents receiving these calls are encouraged to call the County Sheriff’s Office.  

West Peoria will soon experience what some county officials are calling a college move-in day for senior citizens. More than 170 residents from Bel-Wood Nursing Home will be transferred to the newly-built Heddington Oaks facility September 25th.
