More voters than ever before in Peoria and Tazewell counties are choosing to cast their ballots before Election Day, leading to some long lines at polling locations.

Pre-trial defendants who remain in custody are still allowed to vote in the upcoming election, and 2020 is the first year Illinois state law mandates having a vote-by-mail option available.

Peoria County voters can expect new voter registration cards in the mail.

The slate of at-large candidates is set in the City of Peoria. Rob Hanauer won the fourth and final spot on the ballot by one vote. He beat Amr Elsamny 2004 to 2003.


The mailed ballots that trickled in since election day created a state of flux between Hanauer and Elsamny. Hanauer was declared the winner at the Election Commission Meeting Thursday when they certified the results of the February 28th primary.


Early Voting in Full Swing in Peoria County

Peoria County voters are casting votes by mail and early in person, more than any other election.

Election Commission says it expects nearly a third of voters will have already cast their votes by Election Day. As of Monday afternoon, a total of 3,000 Peoria County residents voted early in person. Commission Executive Director Tom Bride says he’s not surprised by the spike.

“Because it’s the first time we’ve really had it in a presidential election,” Bride said.

The Peoria County Election Commission has found a new home.

The Board of Elections Commissioners is expected to vote on the newly proposed location at 4422 N Brandywine Dr. next week.

The merger of the Peoria City and County elections offices means the agency needs a bigger, more suitable location.

Grace period registration opens for primary voting

The Peoria County Election Commission shifts gear Wednesday into what is called grace period registration.

People can still register but starting today they must cast their ballot at the same time. Tom Bride, the executive director of the Peoria County Election Commission, says there are lots of voting opportunities.

The newly-formed Peoria County Board of Election Commissioners says so far, it hasn’t had to make any big changes in preparation for Thursday’s special election in the 18th Congressional District.

Prior to May, elections were handled by both the County Clerk’s office and the City Election commission.

Voters approved eliminating the Peoria County Recorder of Deeds office. The office will be folded into the Peoria County Clerk’s office at the end of 2016, when current Recorder Nancy Horton’s term expires.
