Doris Thomas is celebrating the 30th anniversary of her heart transplant Thursday. The 85 year-old was the first person to undergo the surgery at OSF St Francis Medical Center in Peoria in 1987.

Area Hospitals Lift Visiting Restrictions

Peoria area hospitals have lifted their request for people with flu symptoms to voluntarily limit hospital visits because of a decrease in flu cases. The request was in place to help limit flu exposure for the hospitals' patients and staff.  

Hospitalized children get an early visit from Santa

Santa Claus came to town a few days early to visit hospitalized children Wednesday. 

Volunteer Bill Turney donned the red suit and distributed toys to sick kids.  Before he rode the elevator up to the patients’ floor, Turney was already in tears.

“It’s a happy thing, but it’s also a sad thing. Because these children are sick and they shouldn’t be sick in the first place. They’re just babies, but I know that kind of stuff happens," Turney said. "So, we’re here to make them smile for a little bit, forget about their problems and have a whole lot of fun.”

The long-time President and CEO of OSF Saint Francis Medical  Center is stepping down at the end of this year. Keith Steffen has served in the role for 17 years, but has been with the hospital for about 34 years. Steffen says he’s leaving the position to spend more time with family.

3D printing technology at Peoria’s Jump Trading Simulation and Education Center is changing the way doctors perform surgery. A pediatric cardiologist at the Children’s Hospital of Illinois at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center is using the technology to better evaluate congenital heart disease in children. It’s already changed the outcomes of surgeries and the lives of his small patients.

Some area fire fighters and paramedics got to teach future doctors how they respond to emergency situations. The East Peoria Fire Department presented various types of emergency simulations to 30 emergency department residents with OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. The residents also got hands on experience in how to respond to those situations.

Two area hospitals are being recognized for attaining and sustaining excellence in the ways they treat certain medical conditions.

A local hospital took the opportunity to vaccinate most of its staff while performing a disaster drill Wednesday. OSF Saint Francis Medical Center executed a three-hour lockdown early in the morning to determine if it could control access to the facility through three main entrances. It also gave the hospital an opportunity to see if it can vaccinate all of its employees.

Hospitals in the 18-county area are making sure they are equipped to deal with large scale disasters. The Regional Medical Emergency Response Team are meeting just outside Peoria to train personnel how to use emergency medical equipment and make sure it works properly. The team is made up of representatives from 25 area hospitals.

A Korean toddler who received a pioneering trachea transplant in Peoria has died. A spokesperson with the Children’s Hospital of Illinois at OSF Saint Francis says 2-year old Hannah Warren passed away on Saturday.

Dr. Teresa Riech (REESH) is the Emergency Department Pediatric Medical Director at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Illinois. She is receiving the State’s Ron W. Lee Pediatric Care Award.
