Pritzker Explores Bid for Governor in 2018

Mar 14, 2017

J. B. Pritzker says he’s putting 200-thousand dollars of his own money toward a possible run for Illinois governor. The Democratic billionaire today formed an official exploratory committee.

Other Democrats Pritzker may face in next year’s primary include Chris Kennedy, the nephew of former President John Kennedy; Chicago Alderman Ameya Pawar; and Bob Daiber, the Madison County Regional Superintendent of Schools.

Billionaire businessman JB Pritzker says he hates that money has become so important in politics.  Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner has said he’d run for a second term.  Last month, the wealthy Republican governor put $50 million of his own money into his campaign fund.  And that’s left some Democrats wondering if they’re going to need a wealthy candidate to run against him - and JB Pritzker is one of the possible names on the list.

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner sent two clear signals when he dumped $50 million into his campaign fund: The 2018 race for Illinois governor will be a rough one, and the contest starts now.

What's still unknown is which Democrats will try to unseat the multimillionaire former businessman. According to potential candidates and aides, those considering a bid include U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, businessman Chris Kennedy, state Sen. Andy Manar and billionaire investor J.B. Pritzker. Kennedy could make an announcement next month. The others haven't set a timeline.
