Leaders from the City of Peoria and School District 150 are looking at Rockford for ideas on how to connect students to community resources, like job shadowing.

The not-for-profit Alignment Rockford partners with businesses, government and nonprofits to prepare public school students for college and professional development.

Several leaders from the initiative are scheduled to speak on a panel Fri. The discussion is hosted by District 150 in the hopes of growing similar efforts in Peoria.

Peoria Public School District 150 is surveying parents, students and teachers to get a bird’s-eye view of the district’s learning environment and culture.

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey is a statewide initiative with the Illinois State Board of Education, developed by the University of Chicago. District 150’s Chief Curriculum Officer Susan Grzanich says the survey allows members of school communities a chance to have their voices heard.

Peoria School District 150 board members voted 4-to-3 Monday to hire an outside consultant to oversee the search for a new superintendent.

The vote came after an outburst by board member Ernestine Jackson who wanted to table the vote until the board’s next meeting on Nov. 23.

"I am really opposed to bringing someone from outside, who don't know the district or the city" Jackson said. "This is too important."

Board Vice president Rick Cloyd says “time is of the essence” and the board needs to begin conducting a formal search as soon as possible.
