The Peoria community celebrated the opening of the Romain Arts and Culture  Community Center in the old Greeley School in the North Valley neighborhood today. 

Jonathon and Nikki Romain purchased the former school building last year to transform it into a hub for the arts, education, business, and community events. 

Nikki Romain said she hopes kids in Peoria take a lot away from the new community center. 

PHA discusses first phase of Taft Homes redevelopment project

The Peoria Housing Authority continues to work on redeveloping Taft Homes. The Model Group presented plans Wednesday night for the first phase of the project that will take place at the former Greeley School.

The first zoning change request related to the replacement of the Taft homes was on the Peoria City Council's agenda Tuesday, June 24, 2014. The zoning for the historic Greeley School property is in the part of the community known as the North Valley. It's part of the city with well organized neighborhood associations. Some neighborhood association members in the area have questions about the zoning variances required to get the property to meet the needs of the site development currently being proposed. 

The City of Peoria is making a bid to have the LST 325 dock on its Riverfront. Peoria Public Radio’s Tanya Koonce reports:

The Council voted seven to four to extend an invitation to the LST Board, committing 500-thousand dollars to the project and pledging to assemble the remaining financing if the ship makes the move. That could amount to more than a million dollars.

  The Peoria Housing Authority selected a co-developer to handle the Taft Homes project. Peoria Public Radio’s Tanya Koonce reports they’ve also committed to moving forward on the Greeley School site:


The Model Group does property development, construction, and also serves as a management company. It’s goal is to revitalize urban neighborhoods, including mixed-use developments, and affordable housing indistinguishable from market-rate homes.
