President Donald Trump will be visiting an Illinois steel mill that is boosting production as he faces opposition to his imposition of tariffs in international trade disputes.

A proposed settlement has been announced in a 2012 pollution lawsuit brought by the federal government, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan against U.S. Steel Corporation.  The Department of Justice says, as part of a settlement, U.S. Steel would reduce pollution at three iron and steel plants in the Midwest: in Gary, Indiana; Ecorse, Michigan; and Granite City, Illinois.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. Defense Department says an army sergeant from southern Illinois has died in noncombat related incident in Afghanistan.

The Pentagon announced Sunday that 36-year-old Staff Sgt. Christopher A. Wilbur of Granite City died Friday in Kandahar. The exact cause of Wilbur's death wasn't revealed. 

According to the Pentagon, Wilbur was involved in operations connected with tamping down terrorist activity in Afghanistan dubbed Operation Freedom's Sentinel, which was launched in 2015.

A judge sentenced a Granite City man to 24 years in prison for abusing a 7-week-old boy so severely that he broke the child's skull and several ribs.

Thousands of southern Illinois steel workers who are expected to lose their jobs soon could benefit from training and counselling to get them back to work.Madison County officials are working with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to provide assistance to the soon-to-be unemployed workers of U.S. Steel's Granite City plant near St. Louis. U.S. Steel Corp.
