RAPATEE -- Central Illinois is reaching out to to help a rural Knox County family after their house exploded Sunday morning, killing two people. 

The Fairview Fire Department responded to the intersection of Illinois Route 97 and North Street in Rapatee around 11:30 a.m. Sunday. The explosion was heard from Fairview six miles away, the fire department said in a press release.

Drought conditions are not improving across portions of Central and Western Illinois despite recent rainfall. The U.S. Drought Monitor continues to list all of Peoria county and portions of Tazewell, Woodford, Marshall, Fulton and McLean counties as “abnormally dry” in its weekly update released Thursday.

1 Killed, 11 Injured in Canton Gas Explosion

A gas explosion on the square in Canton Wednesday killed one person and injured 11. The blast occurred shortly before 6 P.M. behind the Opera House, but damaged numerous businesses within several blocks of the site. Ameren Illinois spokesman Tucker Kennedy says a company apprentice was fatally injured and three other employees were hurt in the explosion.

 

Gas Explosion Rattles Downtown Canton

BREAKING: A major explosion in Canton this evening on the square left one person dead, others injured and caused massive damage to multiple businesses. More than 500 residents in the area are without power. Natural gas has been cut off to the community until further notice. The public is asked to avoid the area as a precaution while Emergency Management and clean-up crews work to secure the site.
