Members of Peoria's congressional delegation have mixed reactions to President Trump's $4.8 trillion budget request for next fiscal year.

Congressman Darin LaHood says the House vote today formalizing the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump is an attempted nullification of the 2016 elections. 

U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos raised more than $1.5 million in this third quarter of this year. 

Fundraising numbers were submitted to the Federal Election Commission Tuesday. 

Bustos is also the chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. She spent $1.1 million in the 3rd quarter, leaving her with $2.6 million cash on hand.

Her Republican challenger, Esther Joy King, raised just over $120,000 in the third quarter. She said that’s about 20 percent above the goal she set for herself in the first 40 days of her campaign.

Ill. Lawmakers Weigh In On Building Ties With Cuba

The death of longtime dictator Fidel Castro has again sparked interest in Cuba.

Meantime, Illinois lawmakers, both Republicans and Democrats, are already delving deep into developing economic ties with the island nation. 

Congressman Darin LaHood (R-Peoria) gives credit to President Barack Obama for opening up trade with Cuba. Lahood says Cuban trade is important for companies, including Caterpillar because 75 percent of the tractors built in East Peoria are shipped to foreign destinations.

The Peoria International Airport is receiving more than $1.7 million for the rehabilitation of the airport’s apron. Illinois Senator Dick Durbin and Representative Cheri Bustos jointly announced the funding. The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the grant to help with concrete replacements from gates five down to Byerly Aviation. The  announcement builds on more than $1.6 million in federal funding provided last year.

With Congress in recess, US lawmakers are returning to their districts to meet with constituents. Congresswoman Cheri Bustos and Congressman Darin LaHood discussed a wide range topics at a legislative break on a panel attended by adults 50 and older Thurs. 

The event was sponsored by AARP Illinois and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Bradley, or OLLI. 

One of the first topics posed to the representatives was about social security. Lahood, a Republican, says programs like Medicare and Medicaid need to be revised, given the country’s growing deficit.

Illinois Lawmakers Call to End to Cuba Embargo

Opportunities for Illinois' agriculture and business sectors was the focus for state lawmakers who traveled to Cuba this week. 

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Chicago) was among the delegation that traveled with President Barack Obama. A motive of the trip was to advocate for lifting the decades-long trade embargo that separates the two countries.

GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) - U.S. Reps. Cheri Bustos and Rodney Davis say they're traveling to Cuba as part of an agricultural trade mission. Bustos and Davis plan to promote economic development and trade opportunities for Illinois farmers. Bustos is an East Moline Democrat and Davis is a Taylorville Republican.

Subsidized Housing Renovations in Peoria Complete

Four subsidized housing complexes for seniors and families in Peoria have new updates. The 40 million dollar project is the largest ever in the state outside of Chicago.

  CHICAGO (AP) - Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker will visit the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute on Friday in Chicago.  The institute is a UI Labs collaboration and a key part of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation. President Barack Obama created the national network to strengthen America's competitiveness worldwide in manufacturing and the workforce. The innovation institute is focused on digital manufacturing and design. That's the ability to connect different parts of the manufacturing system through data.
