Catholic school students in central Illinois will have the option of returning to the classrooms this fall.

The Diocese of Peoria, which includes the Bloomington-Normal area, announced Friday that all 42 of its primary and secondary schools will open for the 2020-21 academic year.

Students and parents can choose to enroll in five days a week of in-school instruction, or five days a week of online learning. A hybrid alternative is not included in the Office of Catholic Schools’ Diocesan Plan.

A suburban Chicago priest is in line to succeed Bishop Daniel Jenky as the leader of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria in about two years.

Bishop Daniel Jenky said all educational programs at Catholic schools throughout the Diocese of Peoria are suspended next week to allow for cleaning and disinfecting in all buildings in the wake of COVID-19 concerns.

PEORIA -- After a lengthy court battle, New York's highest court has ordered the remains of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen to be brought to Peoria for interment.

The Diocese of Peoria is asking for the community to join in prayer for healing, following the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report on Catholic Church sex abuse.

A jury in Minnesota has awarded $8.1 million to a victim of sexual abuse by a Catholic priest. The priest previously worked in Peoria.

The unnamed victim claims Father James Vincent Fitzgerald molested him in 1978 while he was an altar boy in the Duluth Diocese.

The Ramsey County jury decided Wednesday that the diocese and a religious order were negligent in their supervision of Fitzgerald.

Work is underway to restore St. Mary's Cathedral in Peoria. The $2.3 million project will repair extensive water damage, strip white paint off the stone altar and restore stained glass windows.

The Catholic Diocese of Peoria’s free-loan library now has a new home. Members of the Diocese officially opened the Family Resources Center located across from the Spalding Pastoral Center.
