In Illinois, somebody being paid minimum wage would have to work 99 hours a week to afford the average two-bedroom apartment.  That’s according to a new study.

The study found the average cost for a two bedroom apartment in the state is more than one-thousand dollars a month.

Local and state elected officials gathered outside a high rise in Peoria, where a yellow “Now Leasing” sign hangs. 

US Sen. Dick Durbin, Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth and Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis were among those who cut ribbon on the renovated Glen Oaks high rise on Main Street. The Section 8 project now offers 171 residential units for seniors and the disabled. The building formerly known as "Glen Oak Towers" previously had 168 aging units, and its owners were looking to sell the building before the renovations.

East Bluff Welcomes Its Newest Neighbors

A new duplex in the East Bluff is a step forward for the neighborhood’s revitalization efforts. That was the theme of a ribbon cutting Tuesday,  attended by Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis, 3rd District City Councilman Jim Riggenbach and representatives from several nonprofit organizations. 

45-year-old Erin Flaherty moved into the duplex at  in December. She was previously living in a nursing home.

"And I was looking for affordable housing. It’s hard in Peoria to find something in a good neighborhood," Flaherty said. "I’m very proud to live here.”
