Twenty-seven-year-old Breon Jones has pleaded not guilty in the murder of 38-year-old Marshawn Tolliver.

Jones, of Peoria, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. He's accused of shooting 38-year-old Tolliver multiple times on August 6. 

Tolliver died from his wounds Monday, marking the city's 17th homicide of the year.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood is releasing preliminary autopsy results in two recent homicides in the city of Peoria.

Harwood said Theresa Simmons, 63, suffered blunt force trauma to her head, which caused fractures and severe brain bleeding. Simmons died on Aug. 17 after she was found in her home in the 700 block of W. Loucks Ave. on Aug. 12. 

Her son, Jeremy Simmons, is charged with her death. He's being held on $2 million bond in the Peoria County Jail.

Peoria police officers responded to the Harrison Homes about 10:45 p.m. Sunday after receiving a ShotSpotter alert of multiple rounds fired. 

Police found 34-year-old Bronzell Howard with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just before 11:30 p.m. 

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said Howard died of traumatic and rapid blood loss caused by the gunshot wounds. He did not believe the shots were fired at close range. 


PEORIA -- Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis said police and city leaders need the community to help stand up against violence.

PEORIA -- Peoria Police Chief Loren Marion said a lack of cooperation from people with information is hindering the investigation into the shooting death of 4-year-old Jeremiah Ward. 

Marion said Thursday that community involvement is vital for police trying to solve crimes. 

"We still have individuals that are not cooperating with the police, and that is what is frustrating for me and the detectives and the officers of the police department that we have a dead 4-year-old, and people are not coming forward," he said.

Police say a 4-year-old boy was killed in a South Peoria double shooting Monday evening. Jeremiah L. Ward and an unidentified 23-year-old male were found as officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 2800 block of West Ann Street around 5:45 p.m.
