Tri-County Adds 1,600 COVID-19 Cases In A Week

Tri-County health officials on Wednesday reported 369 new COVID-19 cases, as the test positivity rate spikes in Peoria County.

Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) figures put Peoria County’s seven-day rolling positivity average at 12.8% as of Sunday. Over the two weekend days, there were 302 positives among 1,644 tests for a rate of 18.4%.

The new cases increased the region’s COVID-19 count to 38,834 since the start of the pandemic, with 1,621 added over the last seven days. No new fatalities were reported, leaving the region's death toll at 602.

Peoria-area hospitals have 128 patients with coronavirus infections, including 40 in intensive care units, while abouty 1,940 area residents are isolating at home.

Meanwhile, Peoria County moved above 100,000 administered doses of COVID-19 vaccines, while Tazewell County is on the verge of topping 70,000 and Woodford County topped 20,000.

According to IDPH, the three counties combined to record 2,866 injections in the past day -- well above the daily average of 1,780 over the past week. The region’s total for shots climbed to 191,008, broken down to 100,905 in Peoria County, 69,958 in Tazewell, and 20,145 in Woodford.

The Tri-County has 77,971 fully vaccinated residents, which represents 22.2% of the population. The region added 1,780 fully dosed individuals in the past day. Illinois as a whole is at 19.6% of residents fully vaccinated, with almost 6.6 million total injections.

State health officials reported 3,790 new COVID-19 cases and 28 more deaths since Tuesday, pushing the statewide totals over the past year to 1,265,457 infections and 21,423 fatalities.
