Tazewell County Is Getting a New Public Guardian. Here's What He'll Do.

Aug 27, 2019

Governor J.B. Pritzker has appointed Tremont attorney Tom Brewer as Public Administrator and Public Guardian of Tazewell County.

If confirmed by the Illinois Senate, Brewer will represent adults with disabilities who have no one else to advocate on their behalf. Brewer says they often need a guardian when consenting to medical care or making decisions about their finances.

“I’m responsible for making sure they’re houed in the right place, they get the appropriate medical care and nobody takes advantage of them financially," Brewer said.

The public administrator can also handle the estate of these adults, if they pass away. Brewer previously served in the position from 1996 to 2013.

He said he generally handled 7 or 8 cases at a time.
