From Sandtraps to Sculptures: Park District Eyes Art at Donovan Park

Oct 21, 2019

Structures like sand traps and bunkers may soon be replaced by sculptures at the former Donovan Golf Course.

The Peoria Park District at its November meeting will consider an agreement with a group of private citizens to place fewer than 10 sculptures in the now-Donovan Park. Park District Executive Director Emily Cahill says private dollars will fund any artwork.

"We feel it’s important that no tax dollars are used to support this project, so the group will be working to develop essentially a nest egg to support the sculpture garden at Donovan Park. When those dollars are there, we will work to place sculptures in a really quality way," Cahill said."

If private funding is available, Cahill believes the first sculptures could be in place by early summer of next year. The sculpture garden will feature regional artists with artwork replaced on a three-year rotating basis.
