Residents, family gather to remember Peoria homicide victims

May 11, 2015

Dozens of residents turned out in downtown Peoria last night to oppose recent homicides in the city.

The Peoria Community Against Violence group held a gathering Monday following two homicides this month, including the shooting death of 20-year-old Jordan Walker over the weekend. Walker’s aunt, Shawanda Stokes, says Walker looked after family and liked to play basketball:

“Why him? Why? Why would anybody, for all the violence going on, it really needs to stop. Period.”

Stokes is asking people to come forward with any information related to Walker’s death.

The other homicide this month was the aggravated battery of 61-year-old Gabriel Melendez.  An arrest has been made in that case.

The City of Peoria has experienced four homicides so far this year.
