Peoria County Treasurer Nicole Bjerke proposal of a "compromise" option on property tax payments to allow people to defer 50 percent of the installment due in June for two months was unanimoulsly approved by the county board Thursday.
"This compromise allows relief to the taxpayers by reducing the amount due by June 9th, and allow an extra 60 days to complete the first installment," she said. And it will provide the taxing district a distribution in June, albeit a smaller one, to fund their operations."
Bjerke said this will help people struggling financially due to the COVID-19 crisis who may have trouble paying the full installment in June. But she said you should still make the full payment in June if you're able.
"Though this payment option is available, it should only be used by those that are unemployed, underemployed, businesses that are struggling to make ends meet, landlords that have not recieved their rent payments, and those that are truly struggling," Bjerke said.
The second full payment is still due in September.
