Health officials across the state are concerned flooding rivers and streams have contaminated private water wells.

The Peoria City/County, and the Tazewell and Woodford County public health departments are providing free test kits to residents with wells exposed to flooding.

Officials say flood water can carry a variety of contaminants that cause illness. Residents are urged to test and disinfect wells exposed to flood waters, a process that can take several days.

The free water test kits are available at the tri-county public health departments and the Spring Bay Fire Department during business hours Monday through Friday.
