Flooding Stopped The Steamboat Days Festival, But The Race Will Go On

Jun 7, 2019

PEORIA -- Organizers of Peoria's annual Steamboat Days carnival say Illinois River levels aren't falling fast enough to enable the event to happen next weekend. Mandy Eubank is treasurer for the Peoria Area Event Committee.

Eubank says PACE will take a financial hit from losing Steamboat Days this year. It also runs the Taste of Peoria in August, the Labor Day Picnic and Santa Claus parade.  The Steamboat Classic races are still on schedule for next Saturday.

The group that runs the Steamboat Days carnival expects to take a financial hit now that the event is being canceled this year.

The Peoria Area Event Committee says Illinois River levels are too high to allow for a safe setup next week.

The Steamboat Classic races are still on schedule for next Saturday, June 15.

Eubank says Illinois Valley Striders, the group that organizes the 2 mile, 4 mile and 15-k runs, plans to re-route the courses.
