Flooding Claims Another Victim: The Redneck Fishing Tournament

Jul 5, 2019

Flooding on the Illinois River has claimed a toll on another annual event.

Organizers for the Redneck Fishing Tournament in Mason County say flooding and the need for extensive cleanup at the site of the event are forcing them to cancel this year.

The Redneck Fishing Tournament started in Bath, Illinois 14 years ago as residents took a stand against the invasive Asian carp species.

Fishers from across the state have taken their boats out on the Illinois River every year since to see who can catch the most Asian carp with their nets in a few hours’ time.

The tournament also raises money for veterans’ organizations.

Organizers say they are now focused on planning for 2020's tournament.

Earlier this year, flooding also forced the cancellation of the Steamboat Days Festival on the Peoria riverfront.
