The East Peoria City Council is set to vote Tuesday on implementing a three percent sales tax on recreational cannabis sales.
Opinion was split down the middle during a public input forum held last month on cannabis sales within the city.
If passed, the city would still need to amend its zoning code to allow for recreational cannabis sales. NuMed currently sells medical cannabis in East Peoria. That business already meets the prerequisites the city says it would set for a recreational cannabis dispensary.
East Peoria will seek to impose the full three percent additional sales tax on cannabis sales allowed under the new state law. Beginning January 1, recreational cannabis possession and usage is legal in Illinois. But local municipalities have the ability to regulate sales and cultivation.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at East Peoria City Hall.
