Democrats Say “No” to Trump, Rauner Agenda

Aug 18, 2016

As Illinois Democrats rallied in Springfield today, one name was on everyone’s lips.  At a morning meeting, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin was the first in a long parade of Democrats who delighted in taunting the other party.

“Here they were, the party of Abraham Lincoln… unwilling to say publicly the name of their own presidential nominee. I’ll say it: Donald Trump."

Top Illinois Republicans have avoided discussing, mentioning, or even acknowledging their party’s presidential pick. But Democrats, like state Treasurer Mike Frerichs, want Trump tied to every Republican in the state.

“And so to the Trump and Rauner agenda, we as Democrats say ‘no.’”

Republicans are working to gain seats in the state legislature. They’re hoping to overcome a feared Trump drag on the ticket by spending millions of dollars from Gov. Bruce Rauner's fortune.
