Health officials announced Friday the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Tri-County area since the start of the pandemic has risen to 2,633.

Local health officials announced Thursday that a Tazewell County man in his 80s died from COVID-19 complications, marking the Tri-County area's third pandemic-related fatality this week.

On Wednesday, a Peoria County woman in her 40s was confirmed as the region's youngest patient to succumb to the disease since the pandemic began. Both recent victims had underlying health conditions.

The death toll for the area now stands at 46, with 34 coming from Peoria County.

Forty-three Tri-County businesses financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic will benefit from an Illinois emergency grant program.

Peoria Public Schools have pushed the start of classes back three days to Monday, Aug. 24.

The school year was originally scheduled to begin next Wednesday. The delay announced Wednesday night comes two days after the decision by the Board of Education to switch to full online instruction for the entire first semester.

In an email announcing the move, the district said the schedule adjustment will provide more preparation time for the virtual learning format.

A Peoria County woman in her 90s living in a long-term care facility has died from COVID-19 complications, local health officials announced Tuesday.

She is the 44th Tri-County resident to succumb to the disease since the pandemic began.

With 92 new infections confirmed, the region’s total number of cases grew to 2,380. Of those, 1,663 were from Peoria County where 33 people have died from the disease. More than 62% of patients in the region have recovered.

A fast and powerful storm with wind gusts above 60 mph swept through the Tri-County area Monday afternoon, downing trees and knocking out power.

“The line of storms actually originated back in Nebraska and South Dakota early this morning. It tracked all the way across Iowa and gone across most of Central Illinois, and now it’s moving into south central parts of Illinois,” said Chris Geelhart of the National Weather Service in Lincoln. “All along that track there was widespread wind damage that occurred.”

An East Peoria man has died after reportedly fleeing an attempted traffic stop late Saturday night.

According to Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood, 25-year-old Craig Spurlock Junior died at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center just before midnight Saturday.

The coroner's report indicates East Peoria police attempted to stop Spurlock for speeding on the Cedar Street bridge around 11:15 p.m.
