Event Description

Coded Bias Poster

Please join Society of Women Engineers - Central Illinois in this special screening of this eye-opening movie, Coded Bias, to take a closer look at how artificial intelligence has overlooked a huge segment of our population. "Centering on the voices of women leading the charge to ensure our civil rights are protected, Coded Bias asks two key questions: what is the impact of Artificial Intelligence’s increasing role in governing our liberties? And what are the consequences for people stuck in the crosshairs due to their race, color, and gender?" For more information see their website: WMM.COM Here is the link to the movie- https://www.wmm.com/virtual-screening-room/coded-bias-watch-page-swe-central-illinois The password to watch it is SWECOBI22. Please make sure the viewers have this password. About SWE Central Illinois - SWE Central Illinois is a professional organization comprising mostly women engineers from all over Central Illinois. Its reach encompasses Champaign, Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Springfield among several areas . We have over 250 members dedicating to promoting women in engineering, mentoring, advocacy and building a STEM pipeline in the community. Community Events In addition, our members are active volunteers in their local schools participating in career day discussions. We also work with Brownie and Girl Scout troops conducting experiments to help students celebrate the wonder of the world around them and kindle the inquisitive spirit. SWE-CI also collaborates with other Engineering organizations like NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) on events sponsored by Caterpillar like Fresh Start. In over 10 years, the Central Illinois Section has raised over $25,000 to endow a scholarship with the Society of Women Engineers. We have been providing a high school graduate from the Central Illinois area a scholarship to study engineering in college. We have been able to provide scholarships since 2003. Some of the events that SWE organizes or helps with in the community: Lindbergh Mentoring Engineering Day STEM Bootcamp ESL engineering clubs Clover Clinic IGSTEM Please go to SWE Central Illinois website to find a bevy of professional development, K-12 outreach, work life integration and advocacy events in the community. http://centralillinois.swe.org/ Can SWE-CI come to my school? SWE-CI members conduct career workshops/talks, science day booths, family science nights, career/school tours and an ongoing mentoring program at Lindbergh Middle School. If an area school or community is interested in any such activity, contact the outreach committee chair by October 1st of the year. This will provide sufficiently advanced notice so requests are assessed for resources, events planned and members tapped for volunteering. STEM motivation and community K-12 outreach is a core part of what we do at SWE, since 'Aspire. Advance. Achieve' are the words we stand by.
