National Guard

Gov. Bruce Rauner says Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has "failed horribly" on public safety after gunfire in the city last weekend injured more than 70 people and killed at least 11.

The Illinois Senate is urging Gov. Bruce Rauner to reject a presidential call to send National Guard troops to help secure the U.S.-Mexican border.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers, family and friends have attended the funeral for a Rockford police officer who died in the line of duty after a traffic stop.

Prosecutors want a judge to impose a maximum 30-year prison sentence on a former Illinois National Guard soldier, calling his plot to attack a U.S. military facility "a contemptible betrayal of both the Nation's trust and his fellow soldiers.

A government filing Friday in Chicago federal court says 23-year-old Hasan Edmonds deserves the sentence for two counts of conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization because "betraying one's country while in its service is a particularly grave crime."

National Guard members and reservists now will be able to obtain Illinois driver's licenses identifying them as veterans.
Illinois lawmakers approved a measure last year allowing veterans to obtain the special identification by providing a certificate of release or discharge from active duty. But some National Guard members and reservists couldn't provide that paperwork.
Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation Friday allowing those service members to submit additional forms that prove veteran's status.
