East Peoria votes to support keeping same tax rate

The East Peoria City Council approved an annual tax levy ordinance that aims to maintain the same rate as last year.

We're talking with Loyd Kirby, from the Illinois Central College Performing Arts Center. They're presenting Chicago-based comedy troupe The Second City, with their "Nut-Cracking Holiday Revue." It's The Second City's third appearance at ICC in the last several years. The performance features improv and sketch comedy based on familiar holiday situations. The performance is Saturday night at 7:30 at the ICC Performing Arts Center in East Peoria.

Work on Centennial Drive complete

Local, state and federal officials held an official ribbon cutting to mark the completion of Centennial Drive.  The more than three-mile stretch of road connects East Peoria and Washington.  East Peoria Mayor Dave Mingus says the six-phase project is vital to both cities:

East Peoria residents now have a timeline to comply with the city’s mandatory garbage-tote program next spring. Residents with garbage pick-up on Monday and Tuesday need to have a new toter in place by March. Anyone with a Wednesday route must have the container in use by May. East Peoria Public Works Director Steve Ferguson says the city could not require the toter-use at the same time:

MC Sports to open store in East Peoria

A MidWest-based sporting goods company is opening a store in East Peoria. MC Sports is opening a 22,000 square-foot store in the former Shopko building on Main Street. It’s the first business in that location since 2007 when Shopko closed.  The location sits next to East Peoria’s new downtown Levee District that includes CostCo and Target. MC Sports runs more than 70 stores in seven states throughout the MidWest.

Governor Pat Quinn signed a bill that creates a task force charged with helping minority-owned businesses.  Quinn signed the legislation after addressing the Illinois Black Chamber of Commerce during its annual meeting in East Peoria.  Quinn says the newly-created Workforce Development Task Force will make recommendations to the General Assembly this winter:

East Peoria launches new farmer’s market

It’s officially Summer, and East Peoria held a ribbon cutting to launch its new farmer’s market.  The market will be held in the Levee District every Friday from 3 to 6 through September.  Rick Swan is the executive director of the East Peoria Chamber of Commerce. He says more people should come to the market because it’s now held in the new downtown’s pedestrian area:

It runs from 10am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday on the promenade between Costco and Target in East Peoria. $100,000 fireworks display returning to Peoria

The Red, White and BOOM celebration is coming back to Peoria for the 27th year. The cities of Peoria and East Peoria as well as UnityPoint Health-Methodist come together with other area organizations to host the 100-thousand dollar firework production. East Peoria Mayor Dave Mingus says the event is a signal of unity between the two communities:

"Since then, of course, its not just unity between our community, but it's the whole unity with the entire region - all the people it draws in. It gives me great satisfaction to see families down there at the riverfront, both sides, you can hear what's going on," Mingus says.

East Peoria Council supports property sale

The East Peoria City Council approved an agreement with a local developer for six acres of vacant property.  The city-owned property is located in the downtown Levee District across from the new Target store.  The agreement gives developer, WCT properties, four months to attract tenants to the area.  City Commissioner Gary Densberger says the agreement gives the city approval over the final building design and tenants:

The rising levels on the Illinois River could pose a significant risk to residents living around Chillicothe and Rome.  Peoria County says the Illinois River is expected to crest at nearly 30-feet by Monday night.  The County says residents in those areas should be prepared to leave their homes if needed. Peoria County says it will send representatives into flooded areas in the coming weeks to conduct damage assessments.  

Video gaming regulations for East Peoria

  The City of East Peoria is requiring all video gaming machine holders to register. Peoria Public Radio’s Tanya Koonce reports:The East Peoria City Council unanimously approved the measure that requires registration and a $25 per machine fee. Peoria Mayor Dave Mingus says he supports the measure, but the city will need to revisit how it regulates video gaming. “I question the best interest of it being in the city, particularly because we have the Par-a-dice [Casino] that does a good job of monitoring, that does a good job of community support,” Mingus says.

The Levee District is open for business

The City of East Peoria officially has a new downtown it’s calling The Levee District. The city achieved the goal about a decade after the former Caterpillar Foundry Site was declared the place the city would build a downtown. Cullinan Properties handled the development that includes a myriad of new retailers, with restaurants, office space and a Holiday Inn and Suites coming soon. 

East Peoria to get new residential cable option

East Peoria residents will have another cable provider to choose from this summer.  Peoria Public Radio’s Alex Rusciano reports the City Council approved a franchise agreement with ITV-3: 

  The agreement means Comcast won’t be the only residential provider of TV, internet and phone service in East Peoria.  ITV-3 is owned by the same family that owns Family Video rental chain.  Levi Dinkla is Vice President of ITV-3. He says the agreement means more healthy competition:

Target opens in East Peoria's new Levee Distrist

  The new Target Store in East Peoria is open for business. It’s part of the city’s new downtown that includes new roads with a roundabout and storefront opportunities for shops and restaurants. The Costco Store opened about four months ago as one of the anchors to the Levee District. East Peoria Mayor Dave Mingus says, "target is really very symbolic of our vision being enforce. It's been a long journey and now with these openings and more to come, it really just makes it a reality for our public and our region.

East Peoria pursues trail funding

The City of East Peoria is pursuing funding to construct a new recreational trail. The proposed trail would stretch from Riverfront Drive, along Camp Street, to Main Street. East Peoria has already received nearly $150,000 in grants from the Illinois Department of Transportation to design the project. The city is now seeking a $300,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to build the trail. The IDNR grant requires a 50-50 match from the city. Ty Livingston is the city’s Director of Planning and Community Development.

Food carts could come to downtown East Peoria

  East Peoria is looking to allow food carts in its new downtown area this spring.  Peoria Public Radio’s Alex Rusciano reports the idea is to boost more foot-traffic in the city’s new Levee District: East Peoria City Staff proposes allowing six food carts around the Civic Plaza area that includes the new library, meeting space and potential future city hall.
