A Salvation Army Red Kettle in Pekin received a rather special deposit Tuesday. It was a Golden Eagle coin worth more than $140.
The Tri-county Salvation Army is planning to sell the coin to add to its kettle income total. Army officials says the gold coin will help, because the number of bell-ringing days is winding-down, and the number of people seeking assistance in Pekin continues to climb.
The community assistance agency reports food pantry numbers last month climbed 24 percent from the same time last year. There are also 30-percent more families signing-up for toys and food boxes this year compared to last.
The Pekin Salvation Army has raised slightly more than 70% of its $230,000 goal. But the agency is asking for additional volunteer bell-ringers for the remaining 11 days of bell-ringing, in order to maximize outcomes in Pekin.
